New Car Keys Made - How It's Done!
If you have lost all the keys to your car, we can originate a new set. We are an innovative auto locksmith company and have many ways we solve a lost key situation. We often will avoid purchasing key codes by VIN (vehicle identification number) and opt to instead use lock decoders and other methods to save you money. For vehicles using a transponder chip key, we will cut the key by using one of the methods listed below, and then will program the vehicle's immobilizer system to store a new key in the memory.
Car Lock Decoders
Lock decoders allow us to decode one the door locks on your car. We will insert a tool into the door lock that can, with training and skill, be used to determine the way the key needs to be cut. Usually a door lock will have most of the cuts for the key, but not all. We will then progression the key until it works the ignition as well. Progressioning is a technique that uses educated guess work to determine the remaining cuts on a key, but is highly effective in making a correct complete key for your vehicle.
Dissembly of Car Lock Cylinder To Read Wafers
A process in which we remove the lock cylinder from the car and dissemble it entirely. Next we are able to determine the cuts necessary to have a working door key. We then progression a full working car key for the ignition as well.
Some Cars Have A Key Code Stamped On A Lock Cylinder
This is the easiest, but codes are only found on a small amount of car locks. From a key code, we are able to use software to determine the cuts (or bittings) for the key. We then cut the key and mechanically it works.
Car Key Programming
Once we have a key cut that mechanically works the locks (turns the cylinders), we will need to then program the car's computer so that it recognizes the transponder chip embedded in the key. Since the late 1990's, the majority of cars produced were built with an immobilizer system. An immobilizer system is a security measure in which a receiver will detect a programmed key when you go to start the car. If the system does not detect a programmed key, it will assume that you are attempting to steal the car. This system accomplishes prevention of many thefts, including breaking the ignition lock. The car will not start if a programmed key is not detected when the ignition is turned. As a result of this modern security feature, automotive locksmiths now need to have the capacity to program the car. We do this by investing in and training to use the proper equipment to do so.
Car Lock Repair, Rebuilding, & Replacement
Experienced locksmiths are very mechanically inclined and experienced in troubleshooting mechanical problems. In addition, after years of servicing vehicles, we develop experience working on repairing auto locks and are familiar with the majority of problematic auto locks. Patience and understanding are key to making such repairs.
Ignition Won't Turn? | Ignition Lock Solutions
Being unable to start your car due to a mechanical problem with your ignition is an awful experience; if not a dangerous one (such as in the winter). This is the reason why we stock in each of our service vehicles the proper equipment, tools, and parts to either repair or replace almost every ignition. We are fluent in these repairs, and chances are high that we will be able to repair yours, rather than replace. We aim to keep costs low so usually choose to repair vs replace an ignition lock- when possible, and always with warranty. We will offer the option for replacement also, and will advise of which makes more sense. When you call Cityside Locksmith for an automotive ignition problem, know that you are getting a top notch technician with the proper knowledge, tools, and hardware in stock to get you back on the road- fast! Reach us 24 hours a day @ (617) 863-0609.
Ignition Won't Turn? | Details about the lock repair procedure
Most ignitions, in order to be removed and serviced, need to turn to either the accessory position or the on position. Obviously this presents an issue. We will start in this case by lubricating and lightly tapping the key while attempting to turn, which sometimes results in successfully turning the lock- which can now be removed for service. If this doesn't work, we would next decode your key and cut a new metal blank to factory specifications (has no wear), and try it on the lock. We are usually successful in turning the lock with this manner, and can successfully remove and refurbish the cylinder. Worst case scenario equals drilling the ignition lock, coding a new lock to your existing key, and installing it.
To summarize, we will start with the low hanging fruit options and most cost effective ways first, and only if necessary move on to more advanced procedures. This is general information and it must be noted that all different car manufacturers have different ignitions that require slightly different approaches.
